WEIGHT LOSS & PCOS

What is PCOS?

PCOS (Polycystic ovary syndrome) is a hormonal condition which effects women of reproductive age, leading to the formation of water filled sacs (cysts) on the ovaries.

How PCOS effects weight loss…

Struggling to lose weight with PCOS? We have outline why this can be the case.

PCOS can lead to Insulin resistance. Insulin is a hormone released by the pancreas in response to the ingestion of carbohydrates. Insulin’s job is to allow our cells (such as muscle, fat and liver cells) to uptake glucose from the blood.

When someone is insulin resistant, their body isn’t receptive to this hormone, meaning levels of glucose remain high in the blood.

This can eventually lead to the development of type 2 diabetes and is associated with weight gain in females.

How can you learn to manage PCOS?

A great place to begin is with changes to your diet and creating an exercise regime. Below are a few tips on what to implement:

  • Include low GI foods (foods that do not spike blood glucose levels)

  • Incorporate foods high in fibre

  • Choosing wholegrain options over refined sugars

  • Include healthy fats

  • Consume a variety of vegetables

EXERCISE

  • Participate in some form of activity each day

  • 150-300 minutes of moderate activity OR 75-150 minutes of vigorous activity per week

  • Incorporate both aerobic and strength based exercise
